In my recent blog about Geraldine’s funeral I mentioned that Archbishop Neary, while forbidding me from celebrating her funeral in the Cathedral, did not make any direct contact with me. So, to be fair, I am publishing a letter I received for the Archbishop a few days ago.

Dear Fr. Tony
I was very sorry to hear of Geraldine’s death at the end of August, and I write now to offer my sincere sympathy and the support of my prayers to you, Frank, Marguerite, and the extended family.
Geraldine and I met on many occasions over the years – usually after the 10.30 a.m. Sunday Mass in the Cathedral. However, I knew of her for many years before I got to meet her in person. Her reputation in religious life as a very fine teacher, a Sister to whom her students instinctively warmed, and someone who easily won the trust of students, parents and teaching colleagues, was already well established. Later, she used these fine personal qualities to great effect in her healing work as a lay person. Hers was a holistic approach to healing, and there are many who attribute their current good health to Geraldine’s skilful interventions.
You may be aware that I was away on annual leave when Geraldine died. My normal practice is to visit bereaved families in the parish at the time of the funeral and to sympathise in person. When this is not possible, I write a note to sympathise with and support the bereaved family. I am sorry for the delay in this instance, and I am grateful for your reminder.
Please be assured of my prayers for Geraldine’s happy repose, and for you, Frank and Marguerite as you carry the heavy cross of grief.
